In Christian symbolism, the lily is associated with the resurrection of Jesus Christ, partly because its white, trumpet-shaped flowers are reminiscent of purity, virtue, and new life. The Bible contains references to lilies, and according to some Christian traditions, white lilies sprouted in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed the night before his crucifixion, in places where his sweat fell to the ground.
