The Limelight

Eddie squinted against the intense glow of the spotlight. A performer. A portrayer. A liar.

Abbie slipped on her apron and tied her hair up tightly. Her rent was overdue. The bank called today—but she didn’t answer.

Next door, she could hear the roar of the crowd. She had wanted to be there, but…

Just one song left to sing. An unlikely hit written on the back of a high school love note. She lost the lawsuit.

The tour bus pulled onto the interstate. The explosion of the collision, the wailing of the sirens. The unexpected grief… the song now hers to sing.

Abbie squints against the intense glow of the spotlight.

  1. I love a story that comes full circle. Here, you’ve begun and ended with the same scene, with a different player; at the same time, the words she wrote but was given no credit for are now hers again.

    Very thoughtful, Jamison. xo

  2. Very thought provoking, Jim. How our minds work! Your writings have brought much joy in our lives. Thank for that, Jim.

  3. Everything comes full circle in this life. I am old enough to have written lyrics and sent them off, only to have them “pirated” —

How much worse to have your words to a young love reap profit as you are left behind.

So concise, Jamison, and yet the whirlwind of emotions bowl me over!

    1. Thank you for sharing that, K. The theft of your work certainly leaves scars. They can steal your words but not your talent. And your talent is exceptional.

I can see now how this story might resonate with you.

It always amazes me how you can see every meaning, even in a story this compressed. I am blessed to have you here.

  4. Well written about Abbie. She finally got what was her’s, but in an unfortunate way. Keep up the god story writing, Jim.

  5. Your story is hauntingly beautiful. You managed to capture an entire world of longing, regret and unfinished love in just a few words. Eddie’s lie becomes Abbie’s lifelong truth and her solitary song.

    1. Yes—the song Abbie wrote on that high school love note becomes hers again. A high cost, but vindication just the same. I wonder if the spotlight will suit her…

      Thank you, my good friend.
