Raising the Rim

Jake had dreamed of what it would feel like to take the winning shot. He imagined the moment, the roar of the crowd urging him on.

A silent promise hung in the air.

The tension intensified as he gripped the ball, his uncalloused hands laced with adrenaline. His dad’s encouraging words echoed softly, warming his heart. Conquering his breath, he took the shot.

The ball rolled around the rim and fell through the makeshift basketball goal, fashioned from an old peach basket. Somehow, Jake knew he would never be as tall as when he was sitting on his dad’s shoulders.

Author’s Notes:

Historically, the very first basketball games used peach baskets as hoops, which is a nod to the sport’s origins.
