I drive a Chevy truck
So donāt press your luck
I fly the colors high
The anthem still makes me cry
Follow me
To the promised ground
I lead with lead
I donāt need no safe and sound
When the blind man sees
Iāll be on my knees
Follow me
Be free
My neck is red
But I keep my head
I do whatās right
Iāve seen the light
They say I wonāt last
Burn out fast
My faith wonāt die
When the bullets fly
Stand up, letās count
If you donāt belong
Then get out
Follow me
To the promised ground
I lead with lead
I donāt need no safe and sound
When the blind man sees
Iāll be on my knees
Follow me
Be free

Okay, this is so beautiful, and full of faith and patriotism.
But it feels sad to me. Now I am not always the best at identifying what the meaning is. But his saying a few times about the Promise Ground, which seems a lot like the promise Land.
But what I am either seeing is a guy who is going to war and this is like his expectations or his reality that it could happen.
And this I am only guessing, but I wondered if it wasn’t suicide? And yet, that wouldn’t explain bullets flying.
But he talks about the promise ground, when the blind man sees, and the last two lines, “Follow me, Be free.”
And then again, I could be way off base and please forgive me. I do know it’s a beautiful song no matter what. Thanks so much for this lovely read!
Love, Debi
As a country music fan, I really like this. Your writing is capturing a movement among the younger generation carving out their patriotism and faith. I feel this is well written in honor of them.
It’s encouraging to see youth standing up for God and country. Thank you, Paula.
