Casualties

Flash Fiction: 100 words
What is flash fiction?

A woman lies dying in historic Lafayette Square.

Justice Arthur Benson struggles with his decision, torn between the rights of a mother and the protection of her unborn child. The judgement of the court is expected soon; his vote could decide the monumental case.

Christina Benson walks arm in arm with her proud father toward St. John’s Cathedral. A shot rings out. The assassin’s bullet, missing its intended target, rips mercilessly through the white chiffon wedding dress.

Blood warms the cold cobblestones where she lies motionless. As her pale lips part, she breathes a final whisper: “Daddy, save the babies.”

Author’s Notes:

Elements of this story were inspired by actual locations in my home city of Savannah, Georgia.
