Claire counted twelve clock chimes as she reread the ransom note: “Deliver the money to the train station at midnight.”
Her pale, trembling hands clenched the suitcase as she slipped through the damp, deserted alleyways. At the bustling train station, thousands of passengers waited, oblivious.
A voice called from the shadows, “Leave the suitcase and board.”
With tiny beads of sweat on her forehead, Claire obeyed. She watched as a dark figure snatched the suitcase and vanished.
Haunting memories of her military demolition days flooded back as she closed her eyes, said a prayer for forgiveness, and pressed the detonator.
Author’s Notes:
CONTEST PROMPT: Let’s take flash fiction to the extreme. Can you tell a complete story with just 100 words. If so, this is your opportunity to shine.
Your “flash” caught my breath!
The best of this genre stuns…
I felt this to my marrow!
Claire will remain with me
this day.
Would I be brave enough
to vanquish evil?
God willing!
Yes, you can write a story with only 100 words! You’ve proved this and very effectively!
I love the challenge of the short (flash fiction) stories. This was the first of 3 consecutive contest wins. God is good. Many thanks, Miss Grace.
Loved it!! A dark beginning with really quick turn to a happy ending!
